Ribbon Cutting Event for 1130 Filbert Street 9/15/23: Celebrating Affordable Housing in San Francisco

San Francisco, CA (August 23, 2023) - The San Francisco Community Land Trust (SFCLT) is thrilled to announce the ribbon-cutting event for the successful acquisition and conversion of 1130 Filbert Street into permanently affordable housing. The event will take place on September 15th, 2023, at 11:30 am at 1130 Filbert Street, Russian Hill, San Francisco.

Originally purchased on March 31st, 2022, by SFCLT, the four-unit building located in the heart of Russian Hill has been transformed into a haven for seniors and families who have been long-term tenants for decades. Without the intervention of SFCLT, this property would have likely been converted into luxury condos or Tenancies in Common (TICs).

The acquisition of 1130 Filbert Street marks SFCLT's first property in the Russian Hill area and is a significant milestone as the first Small Sites Program acquisition in San Francisco's Supervisorial District 2, the city's wealthiest district.

Saki Bailey, Executive Director of SFCLT, said “Affordable housing in all neighborhoods, particularly in affluent areas where low-income individuals, especially people of color, often lack access to essential amenities, is critical to addressing our housing crisis.”

The planned rehabilitation of 1130 Filbert Street includes seismic retrofitting, external building repairs and improvements, and limited interior renovations. This acquisition not only ensures that three households can remain in their homes but also introduces a vacant unit in 2023/2024, leased at 60% of the Area Median Income (AMI). By providing deeply affordable housing, SFCLT addresses a crucial need within the community.

The success of acquiring 1130 Filbert Street was made possible through the Community Opportunity to Purchase Act (COPA), granting SFCLT the first right of refusal when the property officially went on the market.

The collaborative work of Supervisor Preston & Stefani, the Mayor's office staff, the Mayor herself, the Mayor's Office of Housing and Community Development (MOHCD), and the tenants of 1130 Filbert Street, all played a critical role in the success of transitioning the property into community ownership.

Join us on September 15th at 11:30 am as we come together to celebrate the opening of 1130 Filbert Street, a testament to the power of community-driven solutions and the vision of SFCLT. For more information about this project, please contact Saki Bailey, Executive Director at SFCLT (sbailey@sfclt.org) or Kristen Nation, Program Manager at SFCLT (knation@sflct.org).
